Box Score 2 ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – After taking game one of the series on Friday, the Eckerd College baseball team fell in the final two games to No. 4 Nova Southeastern by scores of 12-1 and 15-5 on Saturday.
Jimmy Gutowski,
Kyle Harding,
Mike Abraham,
James Petika and
David Horsfield were all honored before the start of play today. The five seniors leave their mark after putting everything they have into the EC baseball program over the last few years.
Nova jumped out to an early lead with a two run home run in the top of the first to start game one. The Tritons cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI off the bat of
Matt MacMahon to plate
Carter Cashman. That would be the final run of the ball game for EC.
The second two run home run for NSU came in the top of the third. The Sharks would add two more in the fourth, four in the sixth and then one run in each the seventh and ninth innings.
Gutowski was tagged with the loss in the 12-1 defeat.
Game two started out a little more subtle with both teams staying quiet in the first inning. A solo home run for Nova put them on the board first in the top of the second, before adding two more runs in the third.
NSU added one more run and took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth when the Eckerd bats came out of fire.
Jake O'Rourke tripled to the left field wall and came into score on a
Rowdy Andrews double.
Lucas Luopa knocked in Andrews with a single through the left side. With Zach Mitsmen on second, after walking earlier in the inning, and Luopa on first, the stage was set for Cashman. The left fielder hit his sixth home run in the last 10 games giving his team a 5-4 lead.
The Sharks regained the lead in the next inning bringing two runs around to score. They would add another nine runs before the game was all said and done while holding the Tritons scoreless. The 15-5 win gave NSU the series after the two teams had split the first two contests.
Kevin Plant toed the rubber and went five innings striking out six, but did not factor into the final decision.
Zach Hoppe suffered the loss in game two. Andrews and Cashman both collected two hits apiece in a losing effort.
Eckerd finishes the season 20-27 and 7-15 in SSC play.
