Box Score 2 TAMPA, Fla. – After a rainout on Friday, the Eckerd College baseball game was able to get their three games series with the No. 2 University of Tampa started on Saturday with the Spartans taking both games, 11-5 and 21-8.
Getting on the board first with three runs in the bottom of the second were the Spartans. The Tritons quickly answered back cutting the deficit to just one run in the third.
James Petika ripped a single up the middle and scored off a
Carter Cashman double down the left field line. With two away, Cashman came across home on a defensive miscue, bringing the score to 3-2.
One inning later, two Tampa errors led to a tie ball game with
Nick Hill coming around to score. The Spartans regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning adding two more runs.
UT held an 8-3 lead over EC heading into the eighth. A
Matt MacMahon walk followed by a
Mike Abraham double and a single from
Grant Banko had the Tritons threatening to start the inning. MacMahon and Abraham both crossed home plate on a fielder's choice which led to an error.
Eckerd was unable to getting any more runs home while Tampa added three more in the bottom half of the inning taking game one, 11-5.
Game two started fast and furious with UT jumping out to a 9-6 lead after the first three innings. Eckerd was able to grab one run in the fourth and another in the sixth with RBIs from Cashman and Petika.
Tampa unloaded for 12 more runs over the final four innings of play to walk away with the 21-8 victory.
EC totaled 18 hits between the two ball games.
Lucas Luopa collected five hits in the double header going 4 for 5 in game two alone. Cashman garnered four RBIs on the day adding to his already team leading total. He now has 21 on the year.
Eckerd (13-16, 3-9) will be back in action on Sunday for the final game of the series against Tampa. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
