Box Score ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Pitching and offense helped lead the Eckerd College baseball team to a 9-3 victory over Clearwater Christian College on Tuesday.
Lucas Luopa led off the bottom of the first with a line drive single up the middle. Luopa then stole second, went to third on wild pitch and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Carter Cashman and
Grant Banko also scored in the inning to jump out to an early 3-0 lead.
The Cougars were able to plate a run in the top of third. EC answered back in the bottom half of the inning scoring
Rowdy Andrews from third with a sac fly from Banko.
Both teams managed to get across two runs in the fifth inning. The Tritons opened up the game in the seventh inning with three runs.
Adam Moreau took advantage of a Clearwater miscue scoring from second. Banko collected his second RBI of the game with another sacrifice fly. The final run came off the bat of
Lorenzo Vazquez who knocked in Cashman to put their team up 9-3.
The bullpen was able to lock down the final two innings bringing home the victory. Nine different pitchers took the bump for the Tritons during the contest. The staff combined for 14 strikeouts over nine innings of work.
Nick Alonzo was credited with the win.
Luopa had an outstanding day going 2 for 3 with a walk, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Moreau, Andrews and Cashman all had two runs scored while Banko tallied two RBI's.
It won't take long for Eckerd (1-0) to get back on the diamond. The team will head to Babson Park Wednesday to take on Webber International with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
