Softball Continues Hot Start to Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – A day after taking two games from Ave Maria, the Eckerd College softball team swept the University of Montevallo in a double header on Sunday with scores of 8-0 and 7-4.

Amber Hay wasted no time helping herself out as the starting pitcher in game one. Hay hit her first home run of the season in the bottom of the first inning. It was a three run shot going just right of the foul pole down the left field line.

The Triton offense was kept quiet over the next few innings until Carrie Shere belted a two run homer to right center. EC was not done with the long ball just yet. Erin Dixson hit an opposite field solo home run to put her team up 6-0 to start the bottom half of the sixth. Later in the same inning, Shere decided to end the game early driving in Brittany Mitchell and Dana Paul for the 8-0 victory.

Hay went the distance for the complete game earning her second shutout of the season improving to 7-2. The senior is currently posting a microscopic 0.79 ERA in 11 appearances.

Game two had a slightly different start to it. The Falcons jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Montevallo would add one more run an inning later. Eckerd found themselves in a position they have not been in very often, playing from behind.

In the bottom of the second, Mitchell drove in Chelsea Armstrong from second for the team's first run of the game. Shere carried her power stroke into game two blasting a mammoth three run home run into the stands on the baseball diamond. The long shot tied the game up at 4-4.

Kaycie Duncan joined the long ball frenzy leading off the bottom of the third with a solo shot over the left center field wall. Rachael Luckett added an insurance run later in the inning ripping a line drive to right field plating Hay.

The final strike from the Triton offense came in the fourth inning in the form of an Oberer blast over the flag pole in left field. Dixson shut down the Falcon offense the rest of the way out to claim the 7-4 victory. The pitcher moves to 4-0 on the season.

In all, six home runs were hit on the day by EC. Shere went 3 for 7 with seven RBI's while Armstrong added four hits including two doubles.

Eckerd, now 13-2, is off to one the best starts in program history. The team will look to continue their winning ways at home on Tuesday taking on Webber International in double header action. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m.
