Box Score 2 WINTER PARK, FLA. – The Eckerd College baseball team fought until the end in a fourteen inning ordeal to claim game three of the series, 5-4, and complete the sweep of Rollins College after taking game two, 8-4.
The Tritons (8-2, 3-0) picked up a win in the first game of the series last night, 7-3, and now have won six straight games.
Eckerd collected 23 hits on the day and outlasted Rollins in game three fighting from behind to overcome the Tars in 14 innings.
Gardner Nutter got the win in game one as he went 2.2 innings while giving up only two hits and striking out three.
Kevin Plant toed the rubber and went five strong innings also striking out three.
Game two was a combined effort from the mound as five different Tritons made appearances. Junior,
Mike Eagan walked away with his second win of the year as he closed out the 14 inning matchup throwing 3.1 innings and striking out a season high seven batters.
Game 1 – Eckerd 8, Rollins 4Eckerd starter, Plant along with
Zach Hoppe and Nutter got the job done on the mound as the Tritons' offense went to work in a 14-hit attack.
The Tars got on the board first but the Tritons tied it up in the fourth.
Matt MacMahon singled up the middle and
Adam Moreau single right after him bringing up
Jake O'Rourke who slugged a ball to left field that would score MacMahon.
The Tritons collected all but one of their runs in the last two innings of the game.
EC exploded in the eighth inning batting through the lineup and tagging on five runs with the help of
Lucas Luopa who nabbed an RBI single and
Rowdy Andrews who clubbed his first double of the year.
The Tritons added two more runs in the ninth as Moreau and
James Petika, who both singled to get on, were brought home off a single from Luopa and a wild pitch.
Carter Cashman, Luopa, and Moreau each collected three hits in game one while five other Tritons grabbed one hit apiece.
Game 2 – Eckerd 5, Rollins 4 Eckerd rallied from behind in game two from giving up three early runs in the bottom of the first.
It took just the first inning for freshman,
Nick Alonzo to get warmed up as he would go on to toss four scoreless innings.
Jared Habershaw followed Alonzo and was strong on the mound as he went two innings giving up only one hit.
Grant Banko walked to leadoff the top of the second and was moved up by a MacMahon single. The pair scored off a wild pitch and a laser sent up the middle from O'Rourke.
The Triton offense was quiet for four innings before Luopa took advantage of a Rollins error and scored in the seventh. EC added one more run in the eighth as Cashmen led off the inning with a double and was brought around the bases by MacMahon.
The Tars knotted the game up 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth sending the game into extra innings. Four scoreless innings would go by before the Tritons broke through.
Moreau led off the top of the 14
th with a double to deep right field and then scored as O'Rourke laid down a sacrifice bunt that the Tars threw away giving the Tritons the lead.
Eagan then shut down Rollins to close out the game striking out two of the three batters he faced.
The Tritons will head to Saint Leo University on Wednesday for a non-conference matchup with the Lions. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
