Box Score ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - In a nine inning affair on Friday night, the Eckerd College baseball team took down Colorado Christian University in game one of a two game series, 5-2.
The Cougars jumped out to 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning to get on the board first.
Matt MacMahon led off the bottom half of the inning with a walk.
Lucas Luopa singled to drive in MacMahon to tie the game.
Luopa, who has been on fire to start the season, plated
Grant Banko and
Adam Moreau with a double to left center field in the fifth inning. The two run lead would be all that starting pitcher
Jimmy Gutowski would need as he took over with a dominant performance from the mound. The right hander went seven strong innings giving up one run and striking out six.
The Tritons added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh. Banko tripled to the left center field gap to score MacMahon from first. Banko crossed home plate later in the inning on a sacrifice fly from
James Petika to go up 5-2.
Kyle Harding took over on the mound for the Tritons in the eighth. The submariner shut down the Cougar offense in the final two innings allowing one unearned run and striking out three. Gutowski earned the win in the team's 5-2 victory.
Carter Cashman and Luopa both tallied two hits in the game while MacMahon went 1 for 1 scoring twice.
Eckerd (3-2) will be right back at it tomorrow for game two of the series against Colorado Christian University. The game is slated to start at 6 p.m.
