Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. – In a thrilling overtime matchup, the Eckerd College men's basketball team fell victim to Lynn University on Saturday, 71-67.
The pace was quick in the first half as both teams were eager to put points on the board. Lynn jumped out to a narrow lead but EC point guard
E.J. Moody sent a pass to
Malcolm Brunner Jr. who bounced the ball in off the glass, netting the game up at 5-5.
Lynn was on a 9-2 run when
Altavious Carter laid down a huge dunk, changing the momentum of the game. With 7:18 remaining in the first half,
Jerrick Stevenson stole the ball and sent a quick pass to
Shane Phillips who laid the ball into the net tying up the game 18-18.
Trevon Young sunk in two free throws at the sixth minute mark, giving Eckerd the lead. A huge dunk by Brunner started the Tritons on a 13-3 run to close out the first half, sending them into the locker room with a 10 point edge over the Knights.
The second period brought out the intensity in both teams as they went point for point, Lynn slowly chipping away at the Tritons. Ten minutes remained in the contest when the fighting Knights dropped in a jumper, bringing them within eight.
With one minute remaining, Lynn took the lead. It came down to the wire and with a mere three seconds left in the match
Jerrick Stevenson sunk a three pointer, sending the game into overtime.
Brunner Jr. grabbed the first points of overtime as the six foot six inch senior jumped over the crowd to tip the ball into the net.
Ray Darnell quickly followed on the next possession and tacked on two more. Lynn was quick to answer tying the game up at 62-62.
A good free throw by Brunner Jr. gave EC the edge but it proved to be their last lead of the night. A three pointer followed by a dunk from Lynn's Benjamin Berry would seal the deal and give the Knights the momentum needed to finish the game.
Keshawn Ingram drove the lane to tack on two more points with eight seconds left but Lynn's lead would hold as the Knights took home the victory, 71-67.
Stevenson and Brunner both finished the night with double-doubles. Stevenson led the team with 18 points while pulling down 11 rebounds. Brunner Jr. tallied 12 points and 10 rebounds, nabbing his first double-double of the season. Darnell reached double digits in rebounds as well with 11.
The Tritons (8-5, 2-2) will look to prepare for Wednesday as they will face off with No. 7 Florida Southern (13-1, 2-1). Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. in Lakeland, Fla.
