Box Score ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd College baseball team snapped a tough four-game slide with a victory over Webber International University, 7-5,
on Wednesday night at the Turley Athletic Complex.
The win was the first for the Tritons (21-13, 8-7 SSC) in three meetings with the Warriors (24-24, 9-12 TSC) this season.
Head coach
Bill Mathews also collected his 498th career victory as he continues to approach the historic 500-win career milestone in his 24th year leading the program.
Webber International struck first, but Eckerd answered as
Carter Cashman knotted the score at one in the bottom half of the inning on a single through the left side to score
Lincoln Dunham, who reached on a four-pitch walk.
The Tritons added to their lead in the second inning on an RBI single from freshman
Lucas Luopa and a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Rowdy Andrews to make the score, 3-1.
Eckerd tabbed one run in the fourth and fifth innings and added two more runs in the sixth to take a commanding 7-1 lead. The Tritons chased WIU starter Benjamin Feinman out following just two innings after the righty had a combined eight shutout innings from previous meetings this spring.
After collecting two quick outs in the eighth inning, the Warriors tried to rally following a double from leadoff hitter Chris Suto. The Warriors would benefit from another single from Ramon Sanchez, an Aubuchon double and two Tritons' errors to tab four runs.
After conceding a run in the first inning, starter
Mike Eagan was masterful and went on to toss five consecutive scoreless frames. Eagan moved to 4-0 on the season and gave up just five hits and one walk and struck out three over six innings.
Twelve of the 18 outs Eagan recorded were ground ball outs.
Left-hander
Taylor Owens worked out of the ninth inning unharmed after back-to-back singles to earn his fifth save of the season.
Cashman headed the Tritons' offense, going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
