Eckerd Baseball Wins in Extras to Split With Barry in Final Conference Road Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Eckerd College baseball team turned in an extra-inning win during its doubleheader with Barry University to earn a split in the final Sunshine State Conference road series on Saturday afternoon at Feinbloom Field.

With one weekend win against the Buccaneers (28-18, 8-13 SSC), the Tritons (25-21, 9-12 SSC) have tied their best conference record in over a decade dating back to the 2003 spring with nine wins.

It also represented win No. 502 on the ledger for Eckerd's accomplished 24-year skipper Bill Mathews, who eclipsed the 500-victory coaching milestone recently against Palm Beach Atlantic University.

The Tritons effectively snapped a near eight-year drought with 25 consecutive defeats at the hands of Barry in the head-to-head series, last toppling the Buccaneers back on April 21, 2006, in Miami Shores with a 7-6 final.

Game 1 - Barry 8, Eckerd 0

Barry senior Calvin Rayburn tossed his third complete game of the season in the Buccaneers' game-one win.

Greg Brodzinkski brought in the first run for Barry with an RBI grounder in the second inning. The Buccaneers tabbed two more runs in the inning on a sacrifice fly and a balk.

The Buccaneers added one more run in the third inning on a one-out groundout from Tyler Kellman. Barry added a three-run fourth and one more run in the fifth.

The Tritons opened up the fourth, fifth and seventh innings with leadoff singles from Mike Abraham, Lincoln Dunham and Chris Hanson, respectively, but Barry worked out of each situation with double plays.

Rayburn allowed seven hits over his nine innings and struck out one.

Game 2 - Eckerd 2, Barry 1 (8 innings)

The Tritons bounced back early in game two to hold on for the 2-1 win in extra innings and earn the split.

Sophomore Rowdy Andrews led off the first inning with a one-out double down the left-field line. After a walk to Abraham and hit-by-pitch to Dunham loaded up the bases, Hanson walked in the Tritons' first run of the game.

Both team's pitchers, EC's Jimmy Gutowksi and Barry's Joe Iorio, held the other offense scoreless for the next four innings to push the game into extra innings.

In the eighth, Barry's Iorio loaded up the bases, and with two outs, Dunham laid down a bunt single to bring in the winning run in senior Shane Bishop.

Gutowski earned the win on the mound to improve to 10-2 on the season and is now tied for sixth in Eckerd's storied history for wins in a single season. He tossed seven innings and allowed one unearned run on seven hits and two walks and struck out two.

Sophomore Taylor Owens closed out the bottom of the eighth on a strike out and two groundouts to earn his seventh save of the year. Owens is now fourth in the program's history for saves in a single season.

Up Next: After five games on the road, Eckerd returns home to face Florida Southern College on Thursday at 6 p.m. for Senior Night.
