ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd College baseball team collected its fourth straight win and seventh in its last eight games following a 14-3 victory over Ave Maria University on Wednesday night at the Turley Athletic Complex.
The Tritons (16-6, 4-2 SSC) faced the Gyrenes (14-21, 3-9 TSC) for a single game earlier in the season, taking down Ave Maria by a similar score of 14-4.
Eckerd strung together six runs on seven hits in the first inning to tab all the runs it would need to pull out the win.
Senior
Chris Hanson brought in the first two runs of the game on a double down the right-field line. Vavasis would later score on a Gyrenes' error, and a single from senior
Lincoln Dunham and a two-RBI double from sophomore
Matt MacMahon would bring in the final runs of the inning.
The Tritons would add three more runs in the second inning, four runs in the fourth and one run in the sixth to cement their lead.
The Gyrenes pushed three runs across in the fourth inning off an RBI from freshman Billy Pryor, a hit-by-pitch and an RBI groundout from freshman Andre Steadman to make the score 9-3 but would not score the remainder of the game.
With plenty of breathing room from his offense, started
Mike Eagan tossed five innings and allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out four.
Eagan picked up his third win in five appearances to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Joe Saia,
Jared Habershaw,
David Horsfield and
Gus Cinquino each pitched one inning from the sixth through ninth innings, respectively. The Gyrenes tallied just two hits against the Tritons' bullpen.
Five different Tritons collected multiple hits in the win.
Dunham went 2-for-2 with a walk, three RBI and one run scored, while MacMahon was 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBI with the double to highlight the team's offense.
Mike Abraham and
Mike Vavasis each scored three runs apiece.
Eckerd will meet Rollins College for a three-game Sunshine State Conference series this weekend with one nine-inning game on Friday night at 6 p.m. EST and a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. EST.
