ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.
– The Eckerd College women's tennis program compiled its second win of the spring in the past week, effectively bringing down Warner University on Saturday at the Turley Athletic Complex, 8-1.

After beating Hanover (Ind.) College on Tuesday, the Tritons (2-5, 0-4 SSC) pulled together and earned another non-conference win, this time against the Royals (3-4, 3-1 TSC).

"I am very proud of the girls' performance today," exclaimed EC interim head coach Ben Maxwell. "We had a great win over a competitive team. We started off strong and swept doubles; the girls are continuing to show more promise as the season goes on."

Eckerd started the morning with a doubles sweep featuring the pairings of Gipson Hawn/Carson Trapp, Erika/Emily Fridrik and Katie Benn/Amy Naula, as each duo added a point to the team standings.

Hawn and Trapp edged their respective opponent, 8-6, while the Fridrik sisters had a four-game margin of victory and Benn/Naula posted an 8-3 decision.

Benn/Naula and Fridrik/Fridrik both recorded their second doubles wins of the spring.

The three-point momentum carried right over into the singles contests as junior Gipson Hawn pulled an inspiring three-set win against Warner's Nhatalia Ocampo. She dropped the first set, but bounced back in resilient form to earn additional praise from Maxwell.

"Gipson had a very competitive match and pulled out a tough third set after being up 5-0 and letting the girl back to 5-4," Maxwell said. "I am proud of her ability to stay mentally focused during that set today."

Trapp, the Fridriks and Benn, rattled off straight-set victories in their singles bouts while Naula polished off a convincing final in a single pro-set format to close out the scoring.

The Tritons have defeated the Royals for the second straight year after defending the Turley Athletic Complex with a 7-2 win during a 2013 spring meeting.

The Tritons finish up a five-match homestand next Wednesday by entertaining the University of Mary (N.D.) for a 2 p.m. dual on the Dick Bullard Courts.
