Baseball Falls to Webber International, 12-8

BABSON PARK, Fla. –Webber International University used an early lead in the opening innings to move past the Eckerd College baseball team, 12-8, on Wednesday night at the Heart of Florida Field.
 
The Warriors (3-3, 0-0 TSC) scored first in the bottom of the first inning when Lane Crosson singled to lead off the inning. Crosson advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Chris Suto, and Ramon Sanchez knocked a one-out single up the middle to bring in the run in Crosson.
 
The Warriors tacked on three more runs in the second inning courtesy of three two-out Tritons' errors.
 
The Tritons (2-2 , 0-0 SSC) scored their first run in the fourth inning after sophomore Carter Cashman led off the inning with a double, and one out later, Mike Abraham walked to give the Tritons runners on first and second base. With two outs, James Petika reached base on an error from WIU's third baseman Trip Merrell and Cashman scored on the error to cut Webber International's lead to three, 4-1.
 
But the Warriors answered with three more runs in the bottom of the inning on two hits, a balk and a wild pitch to take a 7-1 lead.
 
Eckerd made a late five-run push in the top of the sixth to pull within one, 7-6. Cashman led the inning once again with a leadoff walk and Chris Hanson was hit by a pitch to give the Tritons runners on first and second. Cashman and Hanson advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch, and Abraham walked to load the bases with no outs.
 
Mike Vavasis brought in the first two runs of the inning with a two-run single, and a sacrifice bunt moved Abraham and Vavasis into scoring position. Matt MacMahon came in to pinch hit and was beaned to load the bases once again, and Lucas Luopa came in to pinch hit and singled to score Abraham.
 
A fielder's choice from Lincoln Dunham scored Vavasis, and the next play Dunham attempted to steal second base and MacMahon scored on the throw to bring in the final run of the inning.
 
Webber International's offense was consistent and the Warriors answered with four more runs to pull away again in the bottom of the sixth, 11-6, before taking a final 12-8 lead in the seventh.
 
Benjamin Feinman earned the win for Webber International. Feinman went five innings and allowed one run on two hits and three walks and struck out six.
 
Zach Hoppe took the loss in his first start of the spring. He went four innings and allowed seven runs on seven hits and one walk and struck out two.
 
Sanchez led the Warriors', going 4-for-4 with one run scored and five RBI, while Vavasis led the Tritons with a 2-for-5 performance and one run scored and four RBI.
 
The Tritons return home on Tuesday, Feb. 11, in a third attempt to play Warner University after a rainout and fogout cancelled previous games. The game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. EST. Live stats and video will be available on www.EckerdTritons.com.
