Box Score

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd College baseball team pounded out 16 hits and drew a dozen walks to help take down Ave Maria University on Wednesday night at the Turley Athletic Complex, 14-4, as the bats continued to stay hot up-and-down the lineup.

Junior Mike Abraham led the Tritons' offense, going 4-for-5 with a walk, four RBI and two runs scored. The Worcester, Mass., native is now 11-for-18 (.611) on the year with one double.

As a team, the Eckerd offense is now hitting a combined .338 on the season. Nova Southeastern came in leading the Sunshine State Conference tonight at a .336 overall clip.

With the most recent win, the Tritons move to 4-2 overall on the season, while the NAIA No. 25-preseason ranked Gyrenes from The Sun Conference went to 10-5.

The Tritons answered a two-run home run by the visitors in the top of the first with four runs in the bottom half of the inning started by a leadoff walk from sophomore Rowdy Andrews. A bunt single from Lincoln Dunham put runners on first and second, and Chris Hanson delivered a single to right field to score Andrews.

A two-run triple from senior Mike Vavasis triggered a pitching change to replace starter Marshall Clutter for Regis Easler, and one out later, Abraham beat out an RBI infield single to give the Tritons a 4-2 edge.

After yielding one run in the top of the third, EC starting pitcher Jimmy Gutowski went on to retire the next eight consecutive batters as part of six complete innings.

Eckerd scored all the runs it would need in the bottom of the third. Sophomore Grant Banko led off the inning with a walk and stole second base. Abraham followed with a single to right center on a 3-2 pitch to score Banko.

The Tritons added two more runs in the third as well as four more runs in fourth, two in the fifth and one more in the eighth.

Gutowski picked up his third winning decision in three appearances. He tossed six innings and allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out four while walking one.

Senior Richard Cruz-Sanchez recorded five of his six outs in relief by way of the strikeout as he finished with two scoreless frames. Sophomore Taylor Owens pitched the seventh in immediate relief of Gutowski.

Eckerd will take on St. Thomas University at Al Lang Stadium in downtown St. Petersburg on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 7 p.m. EST. A release with more details for the offsite game will be published in the near future.
