BOCA RATON, Fla.
– The Eckerd College women's tennis program matched up against one of the nation's toughest opponents to begin the Sunshine State Conference slate on Saturday afternoon, falling to sixth-ranked Lynn University, 9-0.

"I'm proud of the girls' fight and attitudes today because we had a tough one today against a very strong team in the conference," said EC interim head coach Ben Maxwell. "We knew it was going to very tough, but they never gave up and continued to fight even after the match was decided."

"We are looking forward to the rest of our season as we have plenty of winnable matches left on our schedule," he added.

The Tritons (0-2, 0-1 SSC) had faced Northwood University last weekend to open the spring season before taking on the Fighting Knights (5-0, 1-0 SSC), who feature the consensus No. 1 singles player in the ITA national rankings.

Led by top-ranked Val Confalonieri, EC junior Gipson Hawn drew the tough task of slowing her down in the No. 1 singles showdown. Hawn was able to get a total of three games from her opponent in the straight-set outcome.

Juniors Carson Trapp and Erika Fridrik contested Rosalie Willig and Ioana Ivan in straight-set finals in their No. 2/3 singles bouts.

The Fighting Knights were able to pitch shutouts in the No. 1 and 2 doubles matchups while securing an 8-3 decision in the No. 3 battle.

The No. 4, 5 and 6, singles contests featuring EC's Emily Fridrik, Katie Benn and Amy Naula, were played out to an eight game pro-set as the afternoon drew to a close.

Eckerd now turns its focus to Florida Southern College on Tuesday in Lakeland at 3 p.m.
