ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd College women's soccer team's defense held off a strong Barry University squad
on Tuesday night at the Turley Athletic Complex to come away with a 1-0 non-conference win.
Eckerd (5-1, 0-0 SSC) rebounded after a loss to No. 22 Rollins College last Saturday to hand Barry (4-3, 0-0 SSC) its third consecutive loss.
Sophomore
Lauren Monce was the hero for the night. With both teams holding each other scoreless for nearly the entire first half, Eckerd drew a foul and a free kick.
Sophomore
Taylor Tippett took the kick, sending the ball right to the middle of the box. Unmarked by the defense, Monce was there to connect with the ball and send it past Barry goalkeeper Becca Rogers in the 43rd minute.
The goal was Monce's first of the season.
Heading into the second half of play, head coach
Danielle Fotopoulos stressed to the team to play like it was a 0-0 game.
"I told them we have to go in and get after it," Fotopoulos said. "We knew Barry was going to come out really hard in the first 10 or 15 minutes of the half, so we just had to make sure that they kept their composure and continued to work hard on defense."
Although Barry outshot Eckerd 16 shots to seven, the defense kept the Tritons alive. Freshman
Leah Chisolm and Monique Elliot cleared out several balls close to the Tritons' net.
Eckerd junior goalkeeper
Morgan Crescent earned her fifth win and fourth shutout of the season. Crescent tallied seven saves on the night.
Eckerd returns to the pitch on
Saturday, Sept. 28, to face Saint Leo University at Saint Leo. The match is set to begin at
7:30 p.m. EST.
