Box Score
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd College baseball program honored five members of its senior class as they made their final stand together at the Turley Athletic Complex in the 50th game to close out the regular season against Barry University on Monday night, 8-5.
Tyler Abadal,
Joe Clagg,
Jordan Huchro,
Henry Langs and
Lee Spinelle, were all presented with plaques in a pregame ceremony in front of home plate as they were joined by teammates and coaches.
EC Head Coach
Bill Mathews also addressed the parents and fans in attendance to thank them for their support throughout the season and their contributions to the program.
The Tritons (15-35, 2-22 SSC) matched their opponent in the column with 13 on the night, guided by a 3-for-4 effort from junior right fielder
Shane Bishop at the top of the order.
Tyler Kellman and Sheehan Planas-Arteaga each had three hits to drive the Buccaneers (31-19, 14-10 SSC) offensively while Sunshine State Conference batting leader Adrian English pushed his average close to .400 with a 2-for-5 effort.
Eckerd pitching retired English on strikes three times for the first time this year. The Barry third baseman had struck out just 11 times in 200 plate appearances coming into the season finale.
Barry scored four runs on five hits in the top of the first inning facing EC freshman starting pitcher
Nick Hill, who really came on strong in his last two starts on the road at Warner University (April 23) and Saint Leo University (April 30).
The Bucs managed to find the gaps on the infield and drew a bases-loaded walk before Hill induced an inning-ending double play to end the side.
The first of Bishop's three hits came in EC's opening series of at-bats. He would come home to score on the next batter, an RBI grounder by freshman
Rowdy Andrews, after an errant pickoff attempt allowed him to reach third.
Bishop delivered with two outs in the second inning with an RBI single over the second base bag, plating junior
Lincoln Dunham, who led off the frame with a sharp single through the left side of the infield.
The Tritons reached Barry starter Kevin Youst for two more runs in the fourth to make it a 5-4 game, but the Bucs picked both runs back up in the top of the fifth. Youst was tagged for all five of EC's runs on 11 hits.
Freshman
Jared Habershaw struck out six in a strong four innings and shut down the Barry offense for three consecutive innings to give his offense a chance to climb back into contention.
Kellman's double to begin the ninth spelled trouble and the EC offense would go three up, three down in the bottom of the ninth as Barry lefty Joeanthony Rivera allowed just two hits over four scoreless innings to finish the game.
Dunham, Abadal and sophomore
James Petika, each finished with two hits in the box score to conclude the season.
