JUPITER, Fla. – The Eckerd College baseball program had an impressive power display in the opener with four home runs -- including three in consecutive order -- as Palm Beach Atlantic University eventually claimed both non-conference contests on Saturday, 13-8 and 7-1.
Senior
Lee Spinelle drilled a pair of home runs, his third and fourth of the season, while junior
Mike Vavasis and sophomore
Mike Abraham each left the ballpark in succession as part of a 14-hit attack in game one for the Tritons (15-31 overall).
Freshman
Rowdy Andrews went 3-for-5 at the top of the order, freshman
Matt MacMahon was 2-for-4 at the plate while Spinelle, Vavasis and Spinelle, each had multi-hit games to begin the doubleheader.
In their first look at PBA starter Jonathan Kies, the offense came alive early on as Spinelle swatted a two-run shot in the top of the first inning to give the Tritons a 2-0 lead. His blast also trotted home junior
Keegan Oberer, who reached following an error.
A two-run double from Vavasis in the third inning put the Tritons back in the driver's seat with a 4-3 advantage, offsetting two runs in the bottom of the second produced by the Sailfish (27-21 overall).
Spinelle launched another home run into orbit to lead off the fifth inning, his fourth of the year.
It turned out to be a rare back-to-back-to-back occurrence as Vavasis hit his solo homer after Spinelle and Abraham followed with his first blast of the season. The No. 3, 4 and 5, hitters in the lineup helped the Tritons claw back into contention following a six-run fourth frame by PBA.
Unfortunately, the scoring would end there for the Tritons as the Sailfish turned to Matt Niedzwiecki for a 2 2/3 inning save in relief of Kies.
Freshman
Andrew Pierson started game one and gave way to
Jared Habershaw,
Henry Langs,
Austin Bynum and
Gus Cinquino, in the pen.
John Buchko and A.J. Steimel provided the lumber in the PBA offense, slugging their fourth home runs of the season to help Kies record his seventh win.
The Sailfish jumped out with four runs in the first and three more in the second for early separation in game two with Andres Lopes making the start.
Junior
Shane Bishop doubled and singled while freshman
Adam Moreau had EC's RBI by drawing a bases-loaded walk in the second inning that plated Vavasis.
Sophomore
Kyle Harding opened the game on the hill for the Tritons before
Zach Hoppe struck out three as part of three scoreless innings and senior
Joe Clagg didn't allow a hit in his 1 2/3 innings worked in the back end of relief.
The Tritons continue to wind down the regular season with a midweek non-conference battle at Saint Leo University coming up on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. EckerdTritons.com is planning to accompany the team and provide a free audio broadcast to fans.
