Softball Opens Final Regular-Season Series With Defeat Against Barry University

Box Score

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.
– Sarah Broeseker and Kelly Martinez each hit home runs as Barry University defeated the Eckerd College softball program to begin the final regular-season series on Friday night, 10-2 (6 innings).

Freshman Kaycie Duncan took the lead in batting average (.361) and recorded two of her team's five hits, including her team-leading 37th RBI of the spring as the Tritons (19-35, 4-18 SSC) scored in the top of the third and fifth innings.

The first four hitters in the EC lineup were able to record a hit, including junior leadoff hitter Chelsea Jeffares, sophomore Sabrina Lolo and freshman Kara Oberer.

In addition to her homer, Broeseker doubled twice and drove in five runs at the plate to back a solid outing in the pitcher's circle by staff ace Alexis Yohe, who struck out nine in the six-inning complete game effort.

The Bucs (30-18, 17-5 SSC) pounded out 15 hits and put the game away with one out recorded in a three-run sixth frame.

Barry scored in three consecutive innings and generated four runs in the second frame highlighted by Broeseker's two out, three-run blast to deep right field.

The Tritons were able to get one run back in the third following Jeffares' 11th double. She was brought around to score on a lined shot to the right-center gap.

Martinez led off the bottom half of the third inning with a solo shot to left field.

The Tritons would make it closer in the fifth, manufacturing a run on an error, but Barry scored three runs on four hits before play could move into the seventh inning.

EC's Logan Rohrbach, coming off Senior Day festivities in the Tritons' last homestand, worked the first two innings before giving way to junior Whitney Bernier and her 3 1/3 completed innings.

Eckerd and Barry will meet against at Buccaneer Field for a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at noon.
