ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Saint Leo University managed to sweep a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader against the Eckerd College baseball program at the Turley Athletic Complex on a sunny Saturday afternoon, 19-0 and 13-2.
The Tritons (14-24, 2-16 SSC) put the heat on the Lions (28-12, 8-7 SSC) in game two with a 2-1 lead through four innings, but couldn't hold on to preserve the final edge.
EC scored both runs of the doubleheader finale in the bottom of the first inning to grab the temporary advantage.
In his first career start, sophomore
Kyle Harding hurled three scoreless innings before Saint Leo made it a 2-1 game with a sacrifice fly in the third inning.
During the top of the fourth frame, the Lions drew three consecutive walks before Taed Moses hit a grand slam to give SLU a 5-2 lead.
The Lions added five runs in the sixth and scored three more times in the seventh.
Junior
Shane Bishop made the most out of his opportunity in the leadoff role, lining a pair of singles, including one to get EC's offense tracked in the first inning. He would come home on the next at-bat, an RBI double by junior
Lincoln Dunham.
Dunham doubled twice against Saint Leo pitching in game two, his ninth and 10th two-baggers of the season.
With no outs, senior
Lee Spinelle continued the early momentum in the first off Saint Leo starter Matt Hewitt with a an RBI single up the box that brought Dunham home from third.
In middle relief, Lions' reliever Chris Williams lowered his season ERA of 1.50 after scattering three hits in 3 2/3 scoreless innings.
Saint Leo was backed by a seven-inning, 12-strikeout effort from starter Rick Teasley in the opener while Bobby Twitty, Dillon Vitale and Taylor Perez each hit home runs.
EC junior
A.J. Witkowski recorded five impressive strikeouts in his first two innings of relief after using the knuckleball exclusively against the heart of the Saint Leo lineup.
Sophomore catcher
Mike Abraham finished the opener with a pair of hits in four plate appearances, highlighting the Eckerd eight-hit offensive effort.
The Tritons will be on the road for the remainder of the month of April, traveling to the University of Tampa for the next SSC series in the upcoming weekend.
