WINTER PARK, Fla. – Rollins College received another pair of strong pitching performances against the Eckerd College baseball program to complete a Friday afternoon doubleheader sweep at Alfond Stadium, 7-1 and 8-2.
The Tars (17-13, 4-5 SSC) rode the arms of Taylor Smith and Brett Mueller to take the three-game series from the Tritons (13-16, 1-11 SSC).
Smith struck out 10 hitters in 8 2/3 strong innings on the mound in game one while Mueller followed with seven strikeouts in five scoreless frames to record the winning decision in game two.
Smith was one out away from the complete game, but the Tritons' offense reached him for one run in the top of the ninth inning following an RBI single by senior Lee Spinelle, who had two of his team's four hits.
Junior Shane Bishop singled and scored and junior Chris Hanson also had a single to lead off the eighth inning for the EC offense in the opener.
Leadoff hitter Hunter Mayfield led off the Tars' first inning with a single and was brought in the score on a double in the next at-bat by Evan Rivera.
Rollins sprinkled in another run in the third, three in the fifth and two more in the eighth to back up its pitching staff.
Junior Richard Cruz-Sanchez received the starting nod and lasted four innings, allowing four earned runs on five hits. Sophomore Kyle Harding and senior Joe Clagg combined to toss four scoreless innings in relief factoring in unearned runs.
Following Mueller's departure, the Tritons were able to score their runs late in game two following an RBI single by Hanson and another run plated by sophomore catcher James Petika in the top half of the sixth.
Zach Persky tripled, scored three times and drove in two runs for the Tars as both teams each managed nine hits apiece.
Two of Rollins' three doubles came in the second inning following a leadoff double by Brandon Curson and another later in the inning by Brett Flutie.
The Tritons will face Webber International University at the Turley Athletic Complex next Wednesday to begin the month of April. The first pitch between the Tritons and Warriors is set for 7 p.m.
