LAKELAND, Fla.
– Junior outfielder Mike Vavasis hit his second home run in the opener, but Florida Southern College's Brian Johnson tossed a complete-game one-hit shutout in game two to complete a Sunshine State Conference sweep over the Eckerd College baseball program on Saturday, 6-5 and 8-0.

The Tritons (10-10, 0-6 SSC) left Henley Field in search of their first conference win against the Mocs (8-11, 3-0 SSC) after coming into the weekend with a five-game win streak on the line.

EC outhit Florida Southern in game one, 10-7, and took a 4-2 lead in the top of the third inning on Vavasis' two-run blast to also score junior Tyler Abadal.

Vavasis left the park in a two-out situation off FSC starter Alex Norris. EC's sophomore starter Kevin Plant and Norris each dueled through five innings.

Plant went 5 1/3 innings with just four hits allowed in the no-decision effort.

Florida Southern two more runs to snap a 4-4 tie in the seventh and the Tritons got one run back in the top half of the eighth on an RBI grounder by freshman Matt MacMahon.

With the Tritons down by a run, the Mocs turned to closer Nate Carter to finish out the ninth.

Eckerd's Jake O'Rourke reached to represent the tying run with a single, but Carter recorded the final out to earn the save, his second of the season.

Johnson was lights out for the Mocs in game two as the bid for a perfect game as broken up with a two-out single in the sixth as junior Audry Santana delivered a pinch-hit single.

Florida Southern pulled away on the strength of a six-run second inning, a busy frame that included an error, three-run triple and a bases-loaded walk.

Johnson faced one batter over the minimum and picked up six strikeouts in the win.

Next on the schedule, the Tritons will host Tiffin (Ohio) University on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Turley Athletic Complex.
