Baseball Routs Clearwater Christian College, 20-3

Box Score

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.
– With a hit parade featuring 21 base knocks, the Eckerd College baseball program put on an offensive clinic in a non-conference rout against Clearwater Christian College on Tuesday night at the Turley Athletic Complex, 20-3.

Junior first baseman Chris Hanson was 4-for-4 with three doubles, junior outfielder Mike Vavasis had three hits and three runs with three RBI and freshman shortstop Rowdy Andrews was 3-for-3 with three runs scored.

Junior Tyler Abadal scored four times in a 2-for-3 night at the plate while Eckerd pounded out seven extra-base hits.

The Tritons (2-1, 0-0 SSC) had 10 different players record base hits in the near three-and-a-half hour affair.

EC's 23rd-year Head Coach Bill Mathews celebrated his birthday on Tuesday and after picking up career win No. 450 against CCC last season, he continued a streak of memorable outings against the Cougars.

Sophomore David Horsfield worked five strong innings on the mound to record the winning decision in his first start of the season. At one point, he retired nine straight in the middle of his start and found a rhythm after the Cougars (0-4 overall) took a 2-0 lead that was short lived.

Horsfield gave up two runs, one earned on three hits while walking one and striking out one.

He was picked up in relief by five different hurlers all making their first appearance of the spring, including Henry Langs, Richard Kowalski, Gus Cinquino, Austin Bynum and Joe Clagg.

Cinquino worked around a pair of walks to get all of his outs via the strikeout in a scoreless eighth while Kowalski fanned two of the three hitters he faced.

After getting one run back in the second inning against an early deficit, the Tritons showcased their ability to hit to all fields in the third frame by batting around in the order and scoring seven runs on seven hits.

Junior Lincoln Dunham and freshman Adam Moreau each had two RBI with their clutch at-bats, a single up the middle of the diamond and a towering double to the right-center gap.

EC poured it on with six more runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth.

Sophomore backstop James Petika charged the fifth with a two-run double and Hanson capitalized on the inning with a two-run double that scored Abadal and Vavasis.

Hanson terrorized the Clearwater Christian pitching staff, displaying his pull power to the right side of the field as he produced four RBI. He also reached on an infield single to shortstop in the sixth inning.

The junior is now off to a 5-for-8 start to the season while Andrews, Abadal, Moreau, and leadoff hitter Jake O'Rourke are all hitting .400 or better.

The Tritons will head out to Babson Park tomorrow evening to face Webber International University on the road with a 6 p.m. scheduled start.
