ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.
– A trio of singles wins in the No. 1, 2 and 4, slots in the rotation highlighted the Eckerd College women's tennis program's effort in its first non-conference match of the spring against Chestnut Hill (Pa.) College on Tuesday afternoon, 6-3.

After heavy rains pummeled the area earlier in the morning, the dual was underway as scheduled at the Turley Athletic Complex between the Tritons (0-6, 0-5 SSC) and No. 4 ranked (East Region) Griffins (13-6, 6-2 CACC).

Both men's and women's squads played to an 8 game pro-set format, or a race to win eight games.

After the Tritons came close to tipping the Griffins in all three doubles matches, Eckerd forged a comeback early on in singles competition, including two individuals ranked in the East Region.

Already having faced four nationally-ranked foes, sophomore Carson Trapp picked up her first win of the season against the East Region's fifth-ranked Ana Shcherbakova with an 8-5 decision.

After Trapp helped Eckerd get a point back, sophomore Gipson Hawn followed suit, this time taking down Kelly Dennis by a score of 8-6. Dennis came in rated No. 20 in the East Region.

The win in the No. 2 matchup was also Hawn's first of the season.

Another sophomore, Taylor Bullock, came through with the third win to salvage the team's singles split in the No. 4 matchup against Morgan Oeschsle. Bullock picked up her second win of the spring to lead the squad.

Hawn and sophomore Erika Fridrik pushed Shcherbakova and Maria Parapouras, the sixth-ranked doubles tandem in the East Region, to an extra game before falling, 9-7.

Bullock and senior Amanda Teets also were clipped by a two-game margin in doubles while senior Manon Ironside and Trapp were represented at the No. 3 doubles battle.

The Tritons' quest for their first win of the season continues on Saturday as they host NAIA-affiliated Warner University with the match projected to start at 11 a.m.
