Nevin's Trophy Results
South Points #2 Results
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd College coed sailing program again hit the open waters over the weekend competing at both the South Points #2 in Winter Park and Nevin's Trophy in Kings Island, N.Y.
The Tritons earned a runner-up finish in host Rollins College's backyard, while EC managed a placing of 17th in the deep field featured in New York.
Assistant coach
Zack Marks brought sophomores
Seth Barrows and
Ann Williamson to sail in the “A” Division while sophomore
Bradford Cederberg and freshman
Brianna Green (making her collegiate debut) competed in the “B” division.
Marks was pleased with the results and the progressive adjustments the Tritons made during the one-day event on Saturday.
“The team started picking it up and doing really well after the first run,” Marks said. “We'd like to be winning the South Points events because they aren't quite as competitive as inter-sectionals, but it helps us qualify for districts and ultimately, nationals.”
Barrows and Williamson accounted for EC's low point total with 17 as the University of Miami earned the team win.
In the “Empire State,” the Tritons went up against a fleet of perennial powerhouses as a mix of returners and freshmen sent by Head Coach
Kevin Reali got their first taste of collegiate sailing for the season.
“The field was deep, still, I was hoping for a better result,” Reali said. “I took a lot away at my first event with the team. Seeing the Tritons in a deep field allowed me to identify where our focus needs to be in order to improve.”
For the upcoming weekend, the Tritons are triple booked in the midst of their busy fall campaign as Reali, Marks and new assistant coach, Alex Boudreau, will be with the team at different locations.
Boudreau has prior experience as an assistant coach with the EC sailing program and sailed collegiately at Roger Williams (R.I.) University as an undergraduate.
Marks will be at the Men's Singlehanded District Championships in Charleston, S.C., Reali will attend the Hood Trophy event in Massachusetts and Boudreau will remain the most local, coaching at South Points #3 in Orlando.
