BABSON PARK, Fla. – A two-out RBI single by Shane McIntyre in the bottom of the 11th inning was all Webber International University needed to come out on top of a low-scoring affair against the Eckerd College baseball program on Wednesday, 1-0.
The Tritons had eight hits to the Warriors' (25-23 overall) seven, but were unable to manufacture any runs against starter Chaz Abeln and two other relievers.
Travis Noland singled up the middle with one away in the 11th and WIU catcher Ryan Regidor, the brother of Tritons' senior
David Regidor, moved Noland to third with another single.
McIntyre promptly greeted EC's eighth pitcher of the night with a single for the walk-off win.
Eckerd's pitching was just as dominant going with the committee approach and eight different pitchers were utilized to keep the Webber International offense in check.
Jordan Huchro and
Jake Wilder accounted for the first two scoreless innings before giving way to a pair of scoreless frames worked by
Richard Cruz-Sanchez.
Matt Ramsey had his turn with a scoreless fifth while
Robbie Nabers breezed through the sixth and seventh with three strikeouts.
Johnny Lancaster spun together a perfect eighth and ninth, but with the game still knotted at 0-0, the Tritons went to the bullpen yet again as the game stretched into extra innings.
The Tritons threatened to score the first run of the game in the 10th, spotting runners on the corners with two outs.
Alex Del Monte singled and stole second and third and while Lee Spinelle walked, a strikeout ended the threat.
(David) Regidor kept the friendly sibling rivalry alive with a two-out double in the bottom of the fifth, but after
Joey LaRose led off with a single, he was erased on a double play.
Abeln also worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth, yielding a pair of singles to Spinelle and LaRose and beaning
Kevin Rea to put runners at every station. He was able to avoid trouble by inducing an inning-ending groundout.
The Tritons return to the Turley Athletic Complex on Friday for the start of a three-game homestand against the University of Tampa. The Spartans and Tritons will meet for the first time this spring beginning on Friday night at 7 p.m. for a nine-inning contest.
