ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Rachelle Gremo, Brittany Yates and Diane Gonzalez all homered to key a power display on Friday night as Saint Leo University defeated the Eckerd College softball program at the Turley Athletic Complex, 10-0.
Gremo charged a three-run blast in the first inning, Yates added a solo shot and Gonzalez left the park as part of a four-run seventh for the Lions (18-31, 3-16).
Saint Leo starting pitcher Megan Still retired 11 straight batters to start the game and finished with a three-hit, 10-strikeout effort on the mound.
The game was started 35 minutes prior to the 7 p.m. start in anticipation of weather conditions swirling around off the coast.
Despite a number Sunshine State Conference games getting rained out in the surrounding area this evening, Eckerd and Saint Leo finished without any kind of delay.
Senior
Alex Sasso spoiled the no-hit bid spun together by Still with a sharp single in the left center gap during the fourth inning, while sophomore
Chelsea Jeffares and Jessica Sudler each recorded base hits.
Jeffares socked her sixth double of the season, a ringing shot with two outs in the bottom of the sixth frame.
But that would be the furthest an Eckerd baserunner would reach against Still and despite an aggressive approach at the plate, the Tritons went down swinging on strikes on nine of the 10 punchouts recorded by the Lion ace.
Saint Leo scored one run apiece in the fourth, fifth and sixth, innings.
Gremo drove in three of her four runs on the night with homer to straightaway center field in the first after two of her teammates reached on infield singles.
Saturday's scheduled doubleheader between Eckerd and Saint Leo is still scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. tomorrow with a confirmed announcement coming in the morning.
