Box Score
TAMPA, Fla. – Senior pitcher Deanna Henriott struck out 11 and scattered three hits as eighth-ranked University of Tampa held on for victory against the Eckerd College softball team on Friday night, 6-0, at Naimoli Family Stadium.
UT catcher Becky Vyzas tripled twice and Taylor Storey drove in a pair of runs to lead the Spartans (32-5, 17-2 SSC), who put four runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning.
The Tritons (11-36, 3-13 SSC) and Tampa were meeting for the first time this spring to kick off a three-game road series.
EC's
Alex Sasso,
Nazley Wilson and
Sarah Agnew, all recorded singles against Henriott.
Eckerd advanced a runner to third base in the fourth inning in part on a stolen base by courtesy runner Julie Bierchen, her 17th successful swipe in 23 tries. She moved up a station on a wild pitch but was left stranded at the corner as a strikeout ended the inning.
Sasso upped her team-leading .322 batting average with a single to lead off the Eckerd fourth.
Vyzas opened the scoring the first with a triple to the gap, but a two-out fielding error prolonged the inning as three unearned runs crossed home plate against the line of EC sophomore starter
Whitney Bernier.
Bernier went 4 1/3 innings and yielded seven hits in the circle with two earned runs.
Logan Rohrbach tossed 1 2/3 frames of scoreless relief to close the game.
The Tritons will match up against the Spartans again tomorrow for a Saturday doubleheader. The first pitcher of game one is projected to be thrown at 1 p.m.
