ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – On the strength of a pair of doubles triumphs and three additional singles wins, the Eckerd College women's tennis program recorded its first victory of the spring campaign by defeating Cumberland (Tenn.) University on a windy Sunday afternoon, 5-4.
Freshman
Erika Fridrik clinched the team victory in singles competition for the Tritons (1-5 overall) against the NAIA-affiliated Bulldogs (0-3 overall).
“Today was a great day for the women,” EC Head Coach
Ben Maxwell said. “They all competed hard and got the win. I am very proud of the girls because they competed hard and left it out all on the court today. I keep telling them to take something positive away from every match, regardless if we win or lose.”
With respective 8-6 and 8-4 decisions, Eckerd's pairings of
Stephanie Jenks and
Taylor Bullock along with
Katie Benn and
Carson Trapp accounted for two of the team's five points.
The Tritons No. 4, 5 and 6, slots in singles action came through with big individual wins as freshman
Amy Naula rolled to a 6-0, 6-0, sweep against CU's Tais Laceida.
Bullock continued her unblemished afternoon with a convincing 6-1, 6-2, decision over Abby Wilson and Fridrik notched her first win of her career with a 6-0, 6-3, score that broke a 4-4 tie in the team scoring.
Eckerd returns to the courts amidst a four-match homestand on Thursday, playing host to Columbus State (Ga.) University for a 3 p.m. start.
