David Regidor had a pair of key run-scoring hits on the day, senior pitcher
Joey Cuda lasted six dominant innings in his game-two start and the Eckerd College baseball team salvaged a split against Florida Southern College on Saturday.
The Tritons (12-10, 1-5 SSC) halted what had become a six-game slide and claimed game two with a shutout by a score of 2-0 after falling in game one, 3-10 to the Mocs (14-10, 5-4 SSC).
EC also claimed its first win in the Sunshine State Conference schedule.
Regidor had a sharp liner for an RBI single in the finale after plating two of his teammates during the latter stages in the opener.
Cuda sailed through six innings of scoreless ball and struck out 10 in his latest start while allowing just one walk and three hits. He struck out the side in the fourth inning, all swinging, and retired the side in order in three of the first four innings he threw.
Senior
Joe McLemore answered the call to the pen in relief of Cuda in a save situation and finished the game with a knee-buckling curveball to strike out T.J. Downum looking.
The Tritons scored their first run in unorthodox style by drawing four straight walks against FSC starter Jon Jones, who just recorded one out before being pulled.
Game one starter
Johnny Lancaster left abruptly with an undisclosed injury after facing the first batter in the second inning. Jordan Huchro worked the next 5 1/3 innings and struck out four as four earned runs were charged against his line.
It took the Tritons a few innings to solve FSC righty Clay Chapman, who yielded just one run before Regidor knocked him out in the eighth to score
Alex Del Monte and
Audry Santana.
Unfortunately, the runs came a bit too late with the score being 10-1 at that point. Cory Jensen had four hits from his leadoff spot and Mike Snyder had three RBI.
Florida Southern scored three runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to gain separation down the stretch.
The Tritons continue play through Spring Break next week as it hosts Clearwater Christian College on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. game. The last time the two teams met on Feb. 16, EC Head Coach
