ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Nova Southeastern University senior pitcher Sara DeMuth pitched a no-hitter Friday night at the Turley Athletic Complex to defeat the Eckerd College softball program in its Sunshine State Conference home opener, 4-0.
DeMuth's perfect game bid ended in the bottom of the fifth inning as senior
Kristen Schurr reached on a fielding error by Nova Southeastern's shortstop. The Sharks' (18-15, 3-4 SSC) senior struck out 12 batters and did not allow a walk on the night.
Eckerd College (9-22, 1-3 SSC) junior
Sarah Agnew led the Tritons defense on the night, recording three assists and three putouts.
Tritons' junior center fielder Julie Bierchen made arguably the best defensive play of the year for Eckerd as she made a diving catch in the top of the fifth to record the first out of the inning.
EC's sophomore pitcher
Kaitlyn Dougherty was tagged with the tough loss as she allowed four runs in just over four innings pitched. Dougherty pitched four consecutive scoreless frames before the Sharks' offense came alive.
