HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The sixth-seeded Eckerd College men's basketball program has turned its attention to the Buccaneers from Christian Brothers (Tenn.) University as NCAA Tournament South Regional action continues to heat up tonight at 5 p.m. CST.
The Tritons (21-8 overall) took care of business against No. 3 seed University of West Georgia in their quarterfinal test and will face yet another Gulf South Conference opponent in the Buccaneers (24-6 overall), who dismantled Florida Southern College before withstanding a furious rally in the late stages.
Christian Brothers finished with a No. 8 ranking in the final National Association Basketball Coaches Top-25 Poll (March 6 edition).
The other semifinal matchup at 7:30 p.m. features top-seeded and regional host University of Alabama-Huntsville against No. 5 Florida Tech. The winner from each semifinal bout will play in the South Regional Championship on Tuesday, March 13, at 7:30 p.m.
Making exits from the tourney from yesterday's series of games include West Georgia, Florida Southern, No. 4 seed Saint Leo University and No. 8 Benedict (S.C.) College.
Live audio and live stats links will be available for the Eckerd/Christian Brothers battle inside UAH's Spragins Hall.
The Tritons controlled the tempo of their opening-round contest against the Wolves from UWG, breaking a 12-12 stalemate in the midst of a 9-0 run behind five straight points from sophomore guard
Josh Snodgrass.
Eckerd led for the entire second half after going into the locker room with a six-point lead and stifled West Georgia's offense to just 21 points in the opening period.
Of CBU's six losses to date, half have come against the Chargers from UAH and another pair of defeats were back-to-back against another program in the national rankings, Arkansas Tech. The Buccaneers are led by 6-10 forward Zack Warner and his 18 points per game while 6-6 guard Scott Dennis scores over 16 and nearly averages 10 rebounds per contest.
Christian Brothers shot 60 percent from the field against the Mocs in yesterday's game, built up a 22-point lead and Warner's 22 points, nine rebounds, six blocks and six assists, were more than enough for the Buccaneers to advance.
This marks just the second time the two schools have ever faced each other, with CBU holding a 1-0 advantage in the all-time series.
