Late-Game Heroics Lift Buccaneers Over Tritons

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -
The Eckerd College baseball team shutout Barry University for six innings before allowing nine runs in the final three frames to fall in the Sunshine State Conference opener, 9-8.

The Tritons struck first in top of the fourth inning as senior Joey LaRose drove in junior Lee Spinelle for the first run of the game on a single through the left side. After senior Aaron Shapiro singled to right field to put the bases loaded, freshman Keegan Oberer hit a two-RBI single through the right side to extend the lead to three runs.

Eckerd College (11-6, 0-1) scored again in the top of the fifth as senior David Regidor scored from third on a throwing error by the Buccaneers catcher.

Senior pitcher Joey Cuda had a solid start to the game for the Tritons, allowing only five hits in the first six innings. However, in the bottom of the seventh with two outs the Buccaneers scored four runs off of five hits to draw even with Eckerd, ending the senior's night on the mound. Cuda had nine strikeouts and allowed onon the night.

With the game tied at four runs a piece in the top of the eighth inning, senior slugger Joe McLemore hit a solo homerun to left field to put the Tritons ahead by one run. Senior Alex Del Monte drew a bases-loaded walk to extend the lead to two runs before Regidor reached on a fielding error that allowed two more Eckerd runs to score.

Barry University (7-8, 1-0) would get one run back in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut the lead to three but eruptted in the bottom of the ninth to score four runs off of four hits. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning with the game tied at eight runs a piece, Barry's senior outfielder Howard Holness delivered a game-winning walk-off single to right field.
