Sailing Poised to Capture South Points Series After Runner-Up Finish in Miami

South Points # 5 Results

Moody Trophy Results

MIAMI, Fla./KINGSTON, R.I.
– Thanks to consistent showings in all South Points events this season, including a second-place effort over the weekend, the Eckerd College coed sailing program closed in on a fall title before the SAISA series resets in the spring.

The Tritons sailed the open waters at South Points #5 hosted by the University of Miami and placed second of seven behind only the Hurricanes on Saturday.

Eckerd also competed for one day at the Moody Trophy in Rhode Island, finishing 10th out of 19 programs in the field. Sunday's competition was canceled due to no wind.

At the Moody Trophy, the Tritons were as high as eighth in the field before settling on the low end of a tiebreaker with Harvard University as Stanford University claimed the team title.

“We didn't win South Points, but we had freshmen sail very well in the “B” division,” EC Head Coach Kevin Reali said. “Even though Miami beat us, it was their home venue, and we managed to beat USF in the final standings.”

The Tritons finished fourth at the season-opening South Points #1 regatta in South Carolina, second at SP #2 in Winter Park, third at SP #3 in Orlando and finished with top honors at SP #4 in Gainesville.

The South Points series winner is declared on cumulative point totals from all six events.

A pair of freshmen led the way in Miami as Ben Chafee and Brianna Green sailed together and accounted for a low point total of 11, tops among all sailing combos present at the event.

EC's “A” division at SP #5 was represented by sophomore Bradford Cederberg while freshman Heidi Carlson made her collegiate debut for the Tritons.

Senior Wes Bryne and sophomore Tony Collins were the drivers in Rhode Island and junior Colleen McClung and senior Emily Mitchell were the crew.

The Tritons will host the final South Points series regatta this coming Saturday in St. Petersburg, EC's first home event of the fall. The team will also be competing at the Captain Hurst Bowl in New Hampshire.
