Sailing Qualifies For ACC’s, Places Third at SAISA Fall District Championships

SAISA Fall District Championship Results

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.
– Hosting its second event of the fall season in Boca Ciega Bay, the Eckerd College sailing program had another strong district showing over the weekend at the SAISA Fall Championships, placing third overall.

In the process, The Tritons also qualified with College of Charleston and the University of South Florida for the Atlantic Coast Championships, set for Nov. 10-11.

Eckerd finished third of 12 teams in attendance and selected regattas for the spring season right after the event as coaches convened for a draft to determine scheduling.

EC also played host to the SAISA South Points #6 event earlier this season in St. Petersburg, winning the final regatta to clinch the fall series.

“It was very windy this weekend and the boats held up pretty well (considering their age),” EC Head Coach Kevin Reali said. “Qualifying for the ACC's is a very good accomplishment. The team will start preparing for the spring with team racing and the match racing championships (in Texas) later next month.”

Sailing in the “A” division was junior Wes Byrne and senior Emily Mitchell while the “B” division was manned by sophomore Tony Collins and junior Colleen McClung.

With a high finish at the SAISA Fall Championships, Reali projects the Tritons to compete in eight of the nine team racing events the team is eligible for.

Comparatively speaking, Eckerd made entries in four team racing events in the spring of 2012.

The Tritons will head back to Charleston, S.C., this upcoming weekend to compete in the SAISA/MAISA Intersectional.
