Long Ball Helps No. 15 Tampa Defeat Softball

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Becky Vyzas and Katlyn Raatz each homered during a seven-run fifth inning to lift No. 15 Tampa to a 9-0 win over the Eckerd College softball team on Thursday evening at the Turley Athletic Complex.

 

Vyzas hit a three-run home run before Raatz later added a grand slam to hand the Spartans (36-7, 17-5 Sunshine State Conference) their seventh win in their last eight outings.

 

Susan Jallo went 3-for-4 and scored two runs, part of a 12-hit night for Tampa. Standout right-hander Deanna Henriott (23-4) got the win in the circle, striking out seven while allowing only one hit in four innings pitched.

 

Freshman Chelsea Jeffares went 1-for-2 with a double for Eckerd (14-35, 2-17). Kristen Schurr and Emily Wiemken also recorded a hit apiece for the Tritons.

 

The two teams will play a doubleheader at 6 p.m. on Friday.
