Baseball Swept in Doubleheader at No. 25 Florida Southern

 
LAKELAND, Fla. – The Eckerd College baseball team was swept in a doubleheader at No. 25 Florida Southern on Saturday.

Austin Chubb hit three home runs, including two in the second game, to lead the Mocs to a pair of wins by scores of 8-2 and 10-1.
 
Florida Southern (20-5, 6-0 Sunshine State Conference) hit five home runs on the day and tallied 24 hits. Tyler Benzel went 5-for-5 with a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored.
 
Wess Hollins had three hits overall, including an RBI double in the opener, for Eckerd (11-12, 0-6). Joe McLemore also had three hits.
 
The Tritons had their chances in the first game and were tied 2-2 following Stephen Pelc's RBI squeeze bunt in the sixth.
 
But Florida Southern responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by a two-run single from Chubb. The Mocs added three insurance runs in the eighth to break it open.
 
In the finale, the hosts got to Eckerd starter Jake Wilder (3-3) for 11 hits and nine runs in 4 1/3 innings. Florida Southern left-hander Eddie Sipple tossed a complete game, allowing just three hits while striking out nine.
 
Chubb finished the weekend 6-for-9 with four home runs and 10 RBIs.
 
The Tritons will open a 10-game homestand at 7 p.m. on Tuesday against Southeastern (Fla.).
