Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Against Hillsdale

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd College softball team swept a doubleheader from visiting Hillsdale College on Wednesday at the Turley Athletic Complex.

The Tritons (10-21) took advantage of three Hillsdale errors in a 4-3 win in the opener before using a six-run fourth inning in an 8-6 win in the nightcap.

Alex Sasso went 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the second game, while also getting the win in the circle. Meagan Camp also had two hits with an RBI and two runs scored.

In the opener, Eckerd managed just three hits but broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth. All of the runs were unearned, though Kristen Schurr got the scoring going with an RBI single to left field.

Kaitlyn Dougherty (5-6) picked up the win, scattering five hits while striking out two. She began the game with six consecutive scoreless innings before holding off a late Hillsdale rally in the seventh.

In Game Two, Hillsdale (3-10) grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the first, but the Tritons got two runs in the third on back-to-back RBI sacrifice flies from Sarah Agnew and Chelsea Jeffares.

Eckerd followed with five hits in the fourth inning, helping the hosts stretch the lead to 8-1.

Schurr finished the twinbill 3-for-6 with an RBI.

The Tritons will return to Sunshine State Conference play this weekend at Nova Southeastern. The teams will begin the series at 7 p.m. on Friday.
