Baseball Edged in SSC Opener

Eckerd-Barry Box Score

ST. PETERSBURG
, Fla. – Barry right-hander Manny Rodriguez tossed seven shutout innings to lead the visiting Buccaneers to a 2-0 win over the Eckerd College baseball team on Friday evening at the Turley Athletic Complex.

Rodriguez (4-2) gave up five hits – all singles – and struck out nine to help the Bucs (15-8, 4-0 Sunshine State Conference) win their fourth straight league game.

Matt Petty went 2-for-4 with an RBI single to lead the Barry offense. Chris Leon also had two hits and scored a run.

Joey Cuda (3-1) took the loss for Eckerd (10-7, 0-1). But the right-hander turned in another stellar performance, allowing only two runs (one earned) and striking out 12.

It was the second complete game of the year for the right-hander, who also struck out more than 10 hitters for the third time this year.

Barry got all the offense it needed with single runs in the second and third innings. The Bucs scored their first run off an Eckerd throwing error while trying to turn a potential inning-ending double play.

Petty made it 2-0 in the third with a two-out, RBI single up the middle.

T.J. Mullins worked the final two innings to pick up his second save.

Alex Del Monte and Aaron Shapiro each had two hits for the Tritons, who had seven overall.

The two teams will wrap up the weekend with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
