ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd College softball team had its chances against Palm Beach Atlantic on Tuesday, but the Sailfish got just enough pitching in taking a doubleheader sweep against the Tritons at the Turley Athletic Complex.
Chris Donovan scattered six hits and surrendered an unearned run, and Lauren Bubeck got out of a final-inning jam, as PBA (5-3) took a 2-1 decision in the second game. The Sailfish won 8-0 in the opener, which was resumed after being suspended in the second inning on Feb. 5 due to rain.
Emma Docking went 2-for-4 with a stolen base, and Chelsea Jeffares also had two hits in the second game for Eckerd (1-5). Whitney Bernier tossed a complete game in the circle, allowing just four hits while striking out seven.
The Tritons, though, left nine runners on base and had at least one runner in scoring position in six of their seven at-bats. Bubeck got out of the final jam in the seventh inning after allowing a leadoff double to Jeffares.
Brittany Jones had an RBI single in the second inning for the Sailfish, giving PBA a one-run lead it would never relinquish.
The Sailfish finished off a game that was originally started on Feb. 5 in the opener. PBA scored eight runs in its first at-bat of the season on Feb. 5, but the game was halted in the second inning due to persistent rain.
Eckerd will continue a busy week with a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Thursday against Flagler at the Turley Athletic Complex. Live stats will be available on EckerdTritons.com.
