ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Edging Division I Valparaiso University 5-4, the Eckerd women's tennis team got their first victory for the 2010 season at the Turley Athletic Complex on the campus of Eckerd College Tuesday evening.
The Tritons (1-4) took two matches during doubles play. No. 1 singles
Emmy Laing and
Amanda Teets dominated their opponents, taking them down 8-0.
Stephanie Jenks and
Manon Ironside were victorious at No. 2 doubles, defeating their competition 8-3.
Singles play was split even, as both teams won three sets a piece. Laing took down her opponent, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 1 spot. At the No. 3 spot, Teets defeated her competition, 6-1, 6-0. The final victory came at No. 4 singles, when Ironside went into three sets with her opponent, falling 1-6 in the first set, then coming back to win the next two sets, 6-2, 6-2.
The women's tennis squad will be back in action as they prepare to take on Sunshine State Conference for Florida Southern Friday, March 12 at Florida Southern. Match is set to start at 3:00 pm.
