Schurr Connects with Two Bombs as Softball Defeats Saint Leo, 7-4

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla
. - The Eckerd softball team took on the Saint Leo University Lions in their first conference match of the season at the Turley Athletic Complex Tuesday night.  With the help of two home runs over the center field fence by Kristen Schurr, the Tritons defeated the Lions, 7-4, to bring their overall record to 6-9-1 and 1-0 in the Sunshine State Conference.

The Lions (8-9, 0-1 SSC) jumped on the board first as Elysha Agen was brought home by Brittany Yates' double.  The Tritons answered right back, as Eckerd took advantage of a throwing error which brought home Amanda Kolonick to tie the game up.  Schurr then singled through the left side to bring home Meagan Camp to bring the Tritons on top, 2-1.

Eckerd continued to put runs on the board the next two innings.  The first of Schurr's homers came in the third inning, which brought home Tatyanna Henderson, to make the score 5-2. The Lions made a come back in the fourth inning, taking advantage of two Eckerd errors to score two runs, making the score 5-4.

Saint Leo went scoreless for the remainder of the game.  As for the Tritons, they were able to top off their score in the bottom of the fifth inning with Schurr hitting her second two-run blast to make the score 7-4.

Staring pitcher Mackenzie Dawson pitched the first four innings of the game.  She gave up six hits, four runs, walked three, and struck out four batters to give her the win.  Alex Koronkiewicz came in the fifth inning to close out the game, giving up four hits, no runs, walking two, and striking out four.

Schurr led the Triton offense with three hits in three at bats with two home runs, one single, and five runs batted in.  Kolonick also excelled at the plate, going three-for-four with one run and one RBI.

The Tritons will close out the SSC series with the Lions tomorrow at the Turley Athletic Complex in double-header action.  The first game is set for 6:00 pm.
