ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Eckerd's women's softball team took two losses today as they took on Flagler College. Both games were close, as the Saints won both games with a score of 3-1.
Homeruns is what won the first game for the Saints, as they scored all three runs on two homers. The first homer was from Stacy Piagno, who hit a two-run bomb over the left-center field fence in the bottom of the second inning. The other homer came from Heather Hill, who connected with her solo homer in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Tritons (7-14-1)were able to scatter two hits off the Flagler pitching. Kirsten Cox had a base hit up the middle in the first inning, while Emma Docking notched an RBI single up the middle to bring home Kristen Torres in the top of the third inning.
Mackenzie Dawson suffered the loss for the first game, pitching six innings, giving up eight hits, walking two batters, and striking out six Saints.
It was a similar story for the second game, as Flagler scored three runs on Piagno's second homerun of the day, which was a three run shot to right field in the bottom of the fourth inning. Eckerd threatened to come back as Torres hit a double down the left field to bring home Dawson in the top of the sixth inning to cut the lead down to two runs.
Eckerd made another threat in the top of the seventh inning, as Flagler started out facing the speed demons in the Triton lineup. Meagan Camp got her way on base with a base hit to right field, then was pushed over to second on Docking's base hit to the second baseman. Flagler was able to shut down the next two batters with a diving catch in left field and a strike out to take the game away.
Alex Sasso suffered her first loss of the season. She pitched six innings, giving up seven hits, three runs, and struck out one batter. Amanda Kolonick and Docking each had two hits a piece.
Eckerd will be back in action Monday, as they host No. 25 Carson-Newman. First pitch of the double-header will be thrown at 5:00 pm.
