Softball Splits Season-Opening Doubleheader Against Palm Beach Atlantic

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla - The Eckerd Tritons (1-1) split their home opener double-header against the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish (2-2) at the Turley Athletic Complex, Saturday, February 6th. The Sailfish defeated the Tritons in the first game, 2-0, while Eckerd came back from a 1-0 deficit in the bottom of the sixth to defeat PBA 2-1.

The first game started out 0-0 until the top of the fourth inning. PBA's Chelsea Gravini led off the inning with a single to right field. She eventually scored on a Natalia Ojeda single which brought the score 1-0. The Tritons attempted a comeback in the bottom of the fifth inning as Amanda Kolonick singled up the middle, and then advanced on a stolen base, but PBA put another run on the board in the top of the seventh inning to make the final score 2-0. PBA's Ashley Jones was the winning pitching, allowing three hits, one walk, and striking out seven. Mackenzie Dawson suffered the loss for Eckerd.

Game two started out similar for both teams, with PBA taking the lead 1-0 in the top of the third inning. The Tritons came back in the bottom of the sixth to give the fans an exciting inning. Dawson led the inning off with a single up the middle. Pinch runner Meagan Camp then entered the game for Dawson, who then advanced to second on another up the middle single by Emily Wiemken. Catcher Sarah Agnew also advanced on the bases, getting hit by the pitch, loading the bases with only one out in the inning. After a pop up to the third baseman to bring two outs in the inning, Kolonick ripped a single, bringing in Camp and tying the game, 1-1. With the bases still loaded, Emma Docking was walked, bringing in Wiemken and giving the Tritons the lead 2-1. The Tritons' pitcher, Alex Koronkiewicz was able to keep the Sailfish from regaining the lead, striking out the last two batters in the inning. Koronkiewicz allowed only four hits, two walks, one run, and four strike outs.

The Tritons will be back in action February 13th, as they take on the Royals of Warner University in a double-header at the Turley Athletic Complex in St. Petersburg, Florida. Game time is set for 4 pm.
