WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -
Zaronn Cann led with 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field as the Eckerd Tritons (11-7) held off a Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish team (2-19) that, at one point, trailed by 19 points in the second half before eventually falling, 72-67, on Saturday evening at PBA's Rubin Arena.
In a first half that was relatively evenly-match, PBA's Phil Pejovic hit a three to give the Sailfish a 16-15 lead with 7:32 to go. Eckerd, however, would go on to out-score PBA 15-4 over the course of the remainder of the half, with Cann capping the run with a trifecta of his own with two seconds left in the period.
In the second half, Eckerd carried that run into the first five minutes, capping it at 30-10 after a three-ball by
John Harper put the Tritons ahead, 45-26.
PBA, however, refused to put up a white flag, exploding for a 20-6 run to close the gap to 51-46 after DeAndre Williams and Chris Joseph combined for a trio of free throws with 8:22 to go. That run, though, would be the last fight the Sailfish could muster, as the two teams canceled each other out before settling for a five-point margin in the end.
Eckerd out-shot PBA for the game, 60.9 to 41.9 percent, while out-rebounding their opponent by a slim 27-25 margin. Harper scored 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field, including 4-of-5 from beyond the arc.
Lewis Lampley added 10 points and seven rebounds. Williams led PBA with 20 points and four assists.
Eckerd will return to the hardwood on Wednesday, February 3 as it travels to Miami Shores, Fla. to battle the Barry Buccaneers at 7:30pm in SSC action.
