Eckerd Softball Splits with Lions

SAINT LEO, Fla - The Eckerd Tritons (21-35, 4-17 SSC) snapped a seven-game losing skid, using an offensive explosion to defeat the Saint Leo Lions (29-23, 8-13 SSC) in game two of an SSC doubleheader at SLU's University Field. The Tritons defeated the Lions 7-6 in game two after falling, 12-0 in five innings, in game one.

It was all Saint Leo in game one as they scored 12 runs in the first three innings to account for the final score. Ashley Urbanik was the beneficiary of that run support, going five complete innings while allowing just three hits and striking out seven. Alex Koronkiewicz took the loss for Eckerd.

Game two was a much different story as the Tritons took its first lead, and scored its first runs of the series in the top of the second, taking a 2-0 lead on a pair of RBI singles by Danielle Sedoris and Kristen Torres.

After the Lions tied the game in the bottom of half of the inning, Eckerd struck for five runs in the second as they took advantage of two Saint Leo errors. In the inning, Alex Sasso, Sedoris, Mackenzie Dawson, and Torres all drove in runs to take a 7-2 lead.

Fortunately, those proved to be just enough runs for the Tritons as Saint Leo would score a run in the third before mounting a seventh-inning rally that fell one run short.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Lions scored three runs on a homer by Brittany Yates to make it 7-6 but Eckerd starter Christina Hughes would retire the last two hitters to preserve the victory for the Tritons.

Urbanik, who was stellar in the first two games of the series, took the loss in the series finale after going just two innings and allowing seven runs. Hughes earned the win for the Tritons.

Eckerd will return to action on Friday, April 24 as it hosts the Lynn Fighting Knights at 7pm to open a season-ending SSC series at the Turley Athletic Complex.
