ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Seniors Alex Bodney (men's basketball) and
Chelsea Jeffares were each unveiled as the male/female James R. Harley Award winners at the annual Eckerd College athletics banquet, ceremoniously signaling an end to the 2013-14 academic year.
The James R. Harley Award is annually presented to the male and female student-athlete that has demonstrated leadership and excellence in the classroom, on the field of competition and in their community. This is the highest award an Eckerd College student-athlete can receive.
The only competition remaining for the current academic year features the postseason for coed and women's sailing, who will be competing at the ICSA Gill Coed Semifinals/Finals and ICSA Sperry Top-Sider Semifinals/Finals shortly in Maryland.
Eckerd coaches presented awards to their Most Valuable Player and Triton Award winners in the McArthur Center in addition to extra recognition throughout the evening. Triton Awards are presented to the student-athletes who reach the highest levels of athletic achievement, scholarship and leadership.
Three new members were inducted into the Eckerd Athletics Hall of Fame (
read about their accomplishments here) while coaches
Josh Beauregard (100 wins),
Paul Honsinger (100 wins) and
Bill Mathews (24 years, 504 wins), were all honored for their career accomplishments. The home plate dug out from Mathew's 500th career win vs. Palm Beach Atlantic this spring and a framed #29 jersey were both presented to him. Mathews' jersey number also officially retired.
Donna Grosso (admissions) and Phil Rands (Domino's Pizza, dinner auction committee member) were presented with the Friends of Athletics Award while Bodney and Mara Shingleton (women's golf) each earned the Senior Scholar-Athlete Award.
