DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The Eckerd men's and women's tennis teams competed in their first tournament of the season over the weekend at the Embry-Riddle Open.
For the men, the Tritons bounced back from a tough start on Friday with a win in doubles on Saturday from
Batu Ataseven and
Mario Kirkov, defeating their opponent from Eastern Florida State by a score of 6-2. Kirkov also secured a victory in singles on Sunday, downing his counterpart from Southeastern in three sets. Kirkov won the opener by a score of 6-1 before falling 6-3 in the second. He out-dueled his opponent with a long 14-12 win in the tiebreaker.
Amirali Ghavam also earned a win in singles on Sunday, defeating Pranav Kumar of Embry-Riddle 7-6, 6-1.
On the women's side, Friday featured three wins for the Tritons, with
Laura Ullrich and
Morgan O'Connor highlighting doubles action with a 6-4 victory over Southeaster. Ullrich also picked up a win in singles, posting a three-set triumph over Embry-Riddle.
Fiona Orza also collected a win in singles after coming out on top in straight sets over Southeastern.
O'Connor and Ullrich picked up their second win of the weekend on Sunday in doubles play, winning by retirement over Southeastern. Ullrich also earned her second win in singles and fourth overall of the tournament with a 6-1, 1-6, 10-4 decision over Chloe Do Lago of Southeastern.
The Eckerd women will be back in action this upcoming weekend for the Saint Leo Invitational, while the men will take place in the Embry-Riddle Invitational beginning Oct. 31.
