ST. PETERSBURG – Amy Woodhead's first goal of the season proved to be the difference as the Eckerd women's soccer team blanked cross-bay rival Tampa 1-0 at Johnson Field on Wednesday night. With the victory, the Tritons extended their unbeaten streak against the Spartans to five straight matches.

Tampa generated a pair of early chances, but Madi Winn turned aside an attempt in the fifth minute before the Triton defense came up with another stop three minutes later.

Eckerd responded quickly at the other end. Woodhead broke the deadlock in the 12th minute, finding the back of the net to put the Tritons ahead 1-0.

The Tritons continued to apply pressure throughout the opening half, generating five corner kicks while carrying the one-goal advantage into the break.

Eckerd dictated the action offensively in the second half, out-shooting Tampa 7-2 over the final 45 minutes. Ashley Nelson placed an attempt on frame in the 63rd minute, while Ava Costa forced a save in the 83rd. Freija Aflenzer nearly added an insurance tally late, placing a shot on target in the 89th minute. Costa followed with another attempt moments later as the Tritons kept the pressure on through the final whistle.

Eckerd's defense held firm in the second half, holding the Spartans without a shot on goal over the final 45 minutes to preserve the clean sheet. The Tritons finished with a 9-8 edge in shots and placed four attempts on frame. Eckerd also dominated the corner count, 9-1.

With the victory, Eckerd improves to 4-2-3 overall and 1-0-2 in SSC play. The team will visit No. 1 Florida Tech on Saturday.
