Tritons drop close battle to No. 3 Spartans

ST. PETERSBURG – The Eckerd Tritons volleyball team fell in four sets to the visiting No. 3 ranked Tampa Spartans on Friday from inside the McArthur Center.

Eckerd came out firing in the opening frame. With the Tritons leading 5-3, Hayden Nash stepped to the service line and Eckerd rattled off six straight points to build an 11-3 advantage. The run included three consecutive Tampa attack errors and a kill from Jaelynn Tunley.

The Tritons never let the Spartans back into the set. Eckerd stretched the margin to 16-4 before another four-point surge pushed the lead to 20-6. Seiler Hruska closed the emphatic frame with a kill for the 25-8 victory. Eckerd hit a blistering .560 in the opening set with 15 kills and just one error, while holding Tampa to a -.154 hitting percentage with three kills and seven errors.

Tampa responded in the second set, but Eckerd remained within striking distance throughout before the Spartans evened the match with a 25-22 victory. The visitors carried the momentum into the third, using a .400 hitting percentage to take the frame 25-18 and move ahead 2-1.

The Tritons refused to go quietly in the fourth. Tampa opened an early 9-4 advantage, but Eckerd steadily chipped away. The Tritons erased the five-point deficit and pulled even at 13-13 before taking their first lead of the frame at 14-13. Back-to-back kills from Natalie Aniol later stretched Eckerd's advantage to 18-15.

After Tampa pulled even at 20-20, Hruska answered with a kill to put Eckerd back in front. She struck again for a 22-21 advantage, but the Spartans responded with the final four points of the match to escape with the 25-22 victory.

Despite the loss, Eckerd outhit Tampa .280 to .180 for the match. The Tritons also held a 5-4 edge in service aces, while the teams finished even with six blocks apiece.

Hruska led the Triton attack with 18 kills on a .471 hitting percentage while adding seven digs. Grace Dumont delivered an all-around performance with nine kills on a .538 clip, 29 assists, six digs, and an ace. Tunley added eight kills and nine digs, while Aniol finished with seven kills and three blocks. Sydney Williams paced the back row with 12 digs and two aces.

Eckerd continues SSC play tomorrow at Saint Leo.
