Volleyball wraps up 3-0 weekend with win over Henderson State

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Eckerd volleyball team picked up its third straight victory with a four-set win over Henderson State on Saturday, closing out the Triton/Lion Invite with a 3-1 victory. The Triton took the match with set scores of 26-24, 19-25, 25-12, and 25-20. The Tritons produced 63 kills while hitting .227 and held Henderson State to a .139 hitting percentage.

The Tritons faced an early deficit in the opening set before steadily working their way back into the frame. Eckerd trailed 22-19 late but five straight points gave the team a two-point advantage at 24-22. Henderson State fought off set point to even the score at 24-24, but Hayden Nash answered with a kill before a Reddies attack error gave the Tritons a 26-24 victory. Henderson State responded in the second frame with a 25-19 win to even the match at 1-1.

Eckerd coasted to a bounce-back win in the third. The Tritons broke open an early 3-2 margin with a 9-3 stretch for a 12-5 lead behind kills from Natalie Aniol and Seiler Hruska. Eckerd continued to pull away, extending its advantage to 20-7 before kills from five different players accounted for the final five points. Eckerd totaled 19 kills in the frame and limited Henderson State to just five kills and a -.024 hitting percentage.

The Tritons produced a sizeable comeback to close the match in the fourth. Henderson State jumped ahead 11-2 before Eckerd chipped away, eventually using a 5-0 run highlighted by two Aniol kills, a Jaelynn Tunley ace, and a Peyton Walker kill to pull within 14-11. The Tritons eventually drew even at 17-17 after a Maggie Turner ace. After falling behind 19-17, Eckerd answered with five consecutive points to take a 22-19 advantage. Nash delivered a late kill, Walker added a block, and Tunley finished the match with a kill for the 25-20 victory. The Tritons closed the game on an 8-1 scoring run.

Nash paced Eckerd with 15 kills on a .308 hitting percentage, while Hruska added 14 kills and 15 digs for a double-double. Aniol finished with 11 kills while hitting .360, while Grace Dumont filled the stat sheet with 38 assists, nine kills on a .500 hitting percentage, and 14 digs. Tunley led the defense with 22 digs, while Sydney Williams added 18. 

Eckerd will be back in action Friday to host No. 3 Tampa to begin SSC play.
